The performing arts are a vehicle for historical continuity and memory. They carry with them traces of social and artistic change and the conceptual frameworks within which these arts were developed and transformed-ways that both reflect and shape society. The world of classical Greece deserves close attention in relation to the performing arts because of the extraordinary power of political, educational and philosophical thought that emerged at the height of the period and which has continued to transform our thinking over the past two and a half millennia. This paper takes classical Greece as its starting point and sets out to connect the thinking that helped define this period with subsequent forms of artistic expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
