Many complex systems in both the physical and life sciences can be modeled as interacting elements with discrete-value variables. In most of these systems, stochasticity plays an important role. This paper examines an ecological population dynamics model, a simple model of a gene regulatory network, and a model for the conductance of a nanotube ion channel. The interplay of discrete-value variables, stochasticity, and nonlinear dynamics produces fascinating phenomena that are important in many areas of physics and biology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
