Abstrakt: The article reports on how researchers from Duke University have developed a femtosecond pump-probe microscope for creating three-dimensional images of paintings. Topics discussed include artists' use of the layering technique for added effect and the interest of art historians in determining the materials and methods employed by these artists as well as the chemical changes in pigments over time. Microscopy's use of sample-mediated interactions between two pulsed laser beams is explained.
