Abstrakt: The article explores the roles of children and childhood in 19th-century U.S. popular theater. Particular focus is given to the role of class in depictions of children and childishness. Details on performances by the comedian George Fox as the character Humpty Dumpty are presented. According to the author, works by Fox and other performers questioned bourgeois ideas of childhood innocence. Topics discussed include mixed-age audiences, pantomimes, and child performers.
