Abstrakt: Conclusions about the effectiveness of inpatient treatment for alcoholism and other drug dependencies, and about the length of stay for such treatment, based on the Miller and Hester study (1986) are derived from treatment modalities excluding the Minnesota model. Managed care initiatives which limit access to treatment centers following the Minnesota model are inappropriate and unjust if such decisions are based on the findings reviewed in Miller and Hester (1986).
