Abstrakt: The article discusses the influence of mid-18th-century musical practices in Paris, France on the work of philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. According to the author, Rousseau's ideas about the political aspects of music were derived from his lived experiences. Details on the relationship between intellectual and popular music cultures during the 18th century are presented. The 1749 Affair of the Fourteen, a police crackdown on poetry criticizing Louis XIV, is also discussed.
