The article discusses a study on the effect of diet on excreted fecapentaenes (FP), mutagenic compounds produced by anaerobic bacteria in the bowel, which was conducted in human who were vegetarians and omnivores. Topics include quantifying concentrations of FP in dichloromethane extracts of freeze-dried feces, revealing mutagenic activity in the bowel due to the presence of high FP concentrations in the extracts, and predicting the contribution of FP excretion in cancer prevention. |
