Medication error prevention among pediatric patients is an important aspect of safe care. Electronic prescribing may be useful to help improve safety for children, but there is a real challenge in child and adolescent healthcare because the potential to cause harm is intensified. Various studies describe the benefits and concerns after implementing electronic prescribing systems and clinical decision support system (CDSS) instruments. Most of these studies reveal that electronic prescribing reduces prescription errors and improves safety; nevertheless, specific errors related to the electronic system occur. Clinicians must be educated to prescribe medications and use prescribing systems safely. Although electronic prescribing with decision support may reduce errors, ultimately, the health care provider is responsible for prescribing the appropriate medications and dosages, using the computer as a tool, and providing safe patient care.
