The article presents information on the sexual attitudes of males and females as predictors of interpersonal attraction and marital compatibility. The article explores how reactions to sexual attitudes influence people's responses to strangers and to intimate partners. It investigates whether similarity of sexual attitudes leads to attraction in a laboratory setting. It examines the effect of similarity of sexual attitudes and the direction of those attitudes on sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment. People tend to have acquaintances, friends, lovers, and spouses who agree with them on a large variety of topics. Though not all married partners are similar, couples who are similar across several variables report more satisfaction in their marriages than those who are dissimilar. Holding negative attitudes about sex decreases the probability that one will enjoy sex or talk about sex. However, those with negative attitudes about sex are, for the most part, engaging in sexual activity. The sexual experiences of erotophobic couples presumably consist of more misunderstandings, crossed signals, and incorrect assumptions than those of erotophilic couples. |
