This research replicated and extended the earlier work of Morse and Piland in an attempt to understand the communication skills re- quired by nurses in the work place. The results of this study largely confirm the work of Morse and Piland regarding the importance of listening skills. However, this study found an array of communication skills nurses exhibit in the nurse-administrator relationship to be of greater significance. Nurses seem to be most concerned with such skills as listening, advising, persuading, and managing conflicts when they are in the nurse-administrator relationship. Reasons for these new results, including the possible organizational alienation of the nurses in the health setting, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
