Cutaneous manifestations of chronic renal failure in Bahawalpur, Pakistan.

Abstrakt: Objective To determine the frequency of cutaneous lesions in patients of chronic renal failure (CRF) in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Patients and methods One hundred patients of CRF, regardless of age, gender and cause, were collected from all the four medical units, renal dialysis unit, urology and renal transplantation units of Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur. Patients of chronic liver disease and pregnant females were excluded. They were subjected to deatailed history and physical examination. Results Out of 100 patients studied, 69 were males and 31 females. Age range was 11-80 years. Sixty six percent patients were receiving maintenance hemodialysis and 34% were on conservative treatment. The commonest cause of CRF was diabetes mellitus (38%), followed by hypertension (29%). Eighty five out of 100 patients had some skin manifestation. Fifteen patients had one, while 70 patients had more than one cutaneous finding. Among the cutaneous findings, pallor was the most common, seen in 85% patients. Pruritus was observed in 45%, hyperpigmentation of sun exposed areas in 44% and xerosis in 35% patients. Nail changes were seen in 70% patients; half-and-half nails were the most frequent finding, seen in 38% patients. Conclusion Majority of the patients (85%) of chronic renal failure showed at least one cutaneous manifestation, among which pallor of skin was the most frequent finding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
