The article discusses the results of a study concerning the extent of and risk factors for HIV infection among women entering the prison system in New York in 1988 and 1989. The study found an association of HIV infection and race or ethnicity. The factors associated with HIV seropositivity were identified by multivariate analysis. These include race or ethnicity, blood transfusion and age. The study also revealed a high rate of HIV seropositivity among female inmates especially intravenous drug users. |
