The extent to which differences in intensity facilitate the selection of one of two dichotically presented messages was investigated in 25 male Ss. Different lists of disyllabic words were presented synchronously at five different levels of relative intensity between -10 and +10 dB, with the set signal held at a constant intensity level. Selectivity was found to be a monotonic increasing function of the relative intensity of the set list. However, selectivity was much lower and increased more slowly than suggested in earlier work. Implications of this finding for the future study of relative intensity and auditory selection are described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
