- Hock and Tessier in 1949 recorded an elevation of serum acid phosphatase levels in 17 out of 20 patients 1 h after prostatic massage. Since that time, it has been widely held and taught that prostatic massage causes a rise in the serum acid phosphatase levels for up to 48 h. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of prostatic examination on serum acid phosphatase levels, along with the magnitude of laboratory variations and the effects of tourniquet application on blood sampling.
