Abstrakt: The use of gentamicin as the primary antibiotic in thermally injured children has been investigated at the Shriners Burns Institute for the past five years. During this period, 95 children with major burns (aged 0–16 years) have been treated. These patients were treated when microorganisms were cultured from the blood, or when there were clinical signs and symptoms of septicemia, or physical evidence of burn-wound infection. Topical treatment of the wound consisted of daily hydrotherapy baths, with the application of silver sulfadiazine or Sulfamylon creams. This investigation reveals that gentamicin has been an effective antibiotic in the treatment of septicemia in the burned patient; the overall survival rate in the group studied was 63.4%.
