The article provides an overview on the mineralogy and history of the Saint Louis Mine in Houghton County, Michigan. In 1844, the U.S. War Department instituted a land office in Copper Harbor that released leased land permits to individuals to mine copper in the Keweenaw Peninsula and the Isle Royale. In 1898, the assets of the Saint Louis Copper Co. was acquired by the Calumet and Hecla Mining Co. which initiated a diamond drilling program in 1910. |
