An increase in body fat is generally associated with an increase in risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus; hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Body mass index (BMI) criteria are the primary focus as it is related to presence or absence of obesity-related comorbid disease. Although several studies have shown a strong correlation between body mass index (BMI) and development of critical illness.
