Abstrakt: The present study aims to provide new insights into the leadership-innovation relationship by considering economic and political factors in a certain country, national cultural practices, and the educational level of a country. We propose and test our model with a sample of 55 countries using variance-based structural equation modeling. Results confirm the relationship between cultural endorsement of leadership and national innovativeness. Countries that endorse participative leadership tend to be more innovative than those that endorse team-oriented leadership. Moreover, culturally endorsed leadership dimensions are not directly related to innovation, but mediated via innovation-related cultural practices and economic and political factors. Finally, the level of education is an important contingency variable; it influences which leadership style is accepted in a country; it is directly related to the economic and political factors necessary for national innovation.
