He started his business career by selling encyclopedias and soap for Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, and later worked for radio magnate Roy Thomson. Following his retirement, he bought the Canadian baseball team Toronto Maple Leafs, a 25 percent interest in the American football team Washington Redskins.
