Recent experiments have shown that interpersonal attraction is a powerful determinant of the strength of conformity pressures , the emergence of communication channels, the level of productivity, the amount of overt aggression directed toward an attacker, and other social behaviors. The present experiment tests the hypothesis concerning responsibility suggested by such a finding. Thus, holding the amount of punishment meted out constant, the attractiveness of a person will vary with the degree of responsibility the sociologists has for that punishment. Another cognitive factor that apparently influences the attractiveness of a person who uses punishment in his interpersonal relations in the "intent" that lies behind such actions. It is difficult to make an unequivocal prediction concerning the interaction effect of the two cognitive variables, responsibility and intentionality. It might reasonably be argued that since a person who lacks responsibility for delivering punishment suffers no loss of attractiveness, the intentions of a nonresponsible punisher are likewise irrelevant. In other words, the good and bad intention variable would be expected to have a differential effect only where the person holds responsibility for punishing. |
