Abstrakt: Obesity rates are on the rise in most developed countries. This phenomenon is also seen in people over the age of 65 years. Although obesity in older people is believed to be protective in some instances (the obesity paradox), there is evidence that obesity in older age can increase the risk of disability. Modest weight loss achieved with hypocaloric diets and exercise is safe and efficacious in improving physical function. Good quality evidence for other obesity management measures in older people, such as bariatric surgery, very low energy diets and anti-obesity medications are lacking, as is pharmacokinetic data. We review current evidence for management of obesity in older people and the role of anti-obesity medications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
