This paper is primarily concerned with a test to failure of a very small-scale model of a reinforced concrete frame patterned after that constructed for the new Staten Island Ferry Terminal in lower Manhattan. Results indicate that microconcrete models even at extreme scale factors conform to the ultimate strength provisions of ACI-318-63 and therefore can be used to study collapse behavior even of relatively complicated frames. Checks against analytic predictions from both "mechanism" and "finite linear approximation" strategies confirm that rational limit analysis and desiqn to utilize moment redistribution and the resulting energy absorption capacity is possible and attractive.
