Abstrakt: Vitamin B12 level is one of often requested parameters, for the diagnosis of neurological and hematological diseases from our labs. The aim of this study was determine the presence of difference in the levels of Vit- B12 of the patients, depending on ages and sex groups, who applied to Neurology Department of the Faculty of Medicine Hospital at Selçuk University. 1689 patients' Vit-B12 levels were examined retrospectively between 04.08.2009-10.07.2012. Mean values of the ages of the patients (67,8%female and 32,2%male) were 42,8±17,84. The median values of Vit-B12 levels were 294,4 (58,16-2000) pg/mL, 307,4 (60,05-2000) for female and 269 (58,16-2000) pg/mL for male. Patients were examined in three groups according to age. Median values younger than 35 years (young), ages between 35 and 59 (middle age) and older than 60 (elderly) were found 273,1 (58,16-2000) pg/mL, 300,2 (60,05-2000) pg/mL and 332,3 (66,95-2000) pg/mL respectively. There was statistically significant difference between groups (p<0,0001). The range of the patients having less than 191 pg/mL Vit-B12 level was 16,9%,for young group 19,17%, middle age 15,73% and elderly group 15,12% which were below given low reference value for kit that we use. Total 10.3% Vit-B12 level were higher than 663 pg/mL. Vit-B12 levels were higher than reference range for young group 6.60%, middle age 9.81% and elderly 18,31%. We thought that Vit-B12 levels of young patient group were less than older due to increased requirement, dietary habits and less B12 supplement intake. Therefore multiple factors should be investigated when detecting Vit B12 levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
