Abstrakt: An essay is presented on the imprisonment of slaves at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 1835 to1862. It comments on hard labor for inmates, noting work on improvement projects and public works, such as the construction of roads. The author considers patterns of crime, segregation of black and white and male and female prisoners, and children of women prisoners.
