The particle-scale momentum transfer in fluid-particle systems involving poly-disperse granular materials or mixtures of solids has not been characterized yet by a generally valid framework. In the present work, one promising theoretical derivation is shortly presented, in which the force exerted by the fluid on individual grains is related to the average force in the system. The model is tested for accuracy by comparing the predictions against fully resolved simulation of the flow through regular bi-disperse arrays of spheres at different values of the size ratio and inter-particle distance. Correct representation of the dependence of the force ratio on size ratio is found for dense systems. However, for intermediate and particularly for dilute systems the comparison highlights noticeable discrepancies. The responsibility for the inaccuracy is identified and possible extensions of the framework are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
