The article discusses the collaboration between the Kangxi Emperor of China and a contingent of Jesuit missionaries sent by French leader Louis XIV in the completion of geographical surveys of the Qing empire. Particular focus is given to evidence drawn from the secret government documents known as folded memorials with vermilion endorsement, which were sent directly from senior officials to the Kangxi emperor. According to the author, the Kangxi emperor was personally involved with the project and represented himself as its patron. Details on the involvement of Manchu officials in the surveying teams are presented. The use of local gazetteers in the surveying process is also discussed. |
