Abstrakt: There are several species of malaria protozoa spreading in different geographic regions. On the other hand, the world becomes more highly connected by travel than ever before. This raises a natural concern of possible epidemics caused by multiple species of malaria parasites in one region. In this study, we use mathematical models to explore such a possibility. First, we propose a model to govern the within-host dynamics of two species. Analysis of this model practically excludes the possibility of co-persistence (or superinfection) of the two species in one host. Then we move on to set up another model to describe the dynamics of disease transmission between human and mosquito populations without the co-infection class (using the results in section 2). By analyzing this model, we find that epidemics involving both species in a single region are possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
