For many years, toxicology, the science of poisons and poisoning, was considered to be no more than a branch of forensic science and criminology. Nowadays, it is clear that the study of applied toxicology in its various forms - clinical, occupational, forensic, nutritional, veterinary, and environmental toxicology, ecotoxicology and related areas - is important, if not vital, to the continued development of life on earth. As a general roule, the most thorough toxicological analyses are performed in the investigation of death. The presence or absence of drugs or poisons can never be determined without performing a complete toxicology screen. The purpose of the screen is to determine whether the death was caused by drug overdose or whether a particular drug was present (or absent) in sufficient amounts to alter behavior and thereby contribute to the death.
