Abstrakt: This paper presents results of an experimental investigation on the behavior of square short columns under both constant vertical load and variable horizontal load till failure to expedite the effect of new configuration of transverse reinforcement with alternate ties for columns. The columns divided to three sets according to the ties shapes (square (single-perimeter hoops), rhombus, hooked) to examine the effect of ties shape on the column capacity and ductility. Each set of columns consist of three columns having different ties shapes and subjected to constant axial load of 200 kN, 300 kN and 400 kN. The test results indicate that the columns with hooked (longitudinal) ties shape have the maximum lateral load capacity than the square shape and the lowest capacity is the rhombus shapes, this results may be related to reaction originate in the ties branches to resist shear force, as in case of hooked configuration the ties resist the lateral shear force by three branches rather than square tie having two branches only to resist shear force, and the rhombus tie having only two inclined resisting reactions. Also results show that increasing the vertical load increase the lateral ultimate capacity and decrease both deflection and strain in longitudinal reinforcement. This finding may seriously be considered for columns subjected to seismic-type loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
