Evidence is presented that vertical movements of an oscillatory or episodic nature are an important feature of plate tectonics. The vertical movement within presumably stable intraplate regions are in the range of 0.1-1.0 cm/yr, approximately an order of magnitude less than horizontal plate velocities. The temporal scale of the movements is 10,000-100,000 years, a relatively short geologic time interval, and the spatial scale is of the order of 100-1000 km. The supporting data for these conclusions come from recent movements, the Quaternary geologic record, and the Phanerozoic sedimentary record. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
