Vernacular architecture in Islamic countries has proven to adhere positively to the socio-cultural and climatic parameters. As a result, certain urban and architectural features have been developed and well adapted to a particular environment. In the case of palm trees settlements, they are often located in arid zones; characterized by extreme climatic parameters, and identified in two categories: regular parameters such as high air temperatures and dryness, and the second identified as sandy wind, droughts, heavy rain falls and floods. There is evidence that these environmental problems are linked to the phenomenon of climatic change. These vernacular settlements proved their adaptive capacities to the regular environmental parameters. However, their capacities to respond to irregular extreme environmental parameters seem to avoid the environmental stress, and perform actions that counteract the inherited vernacular architecture. Hence these settlements develop new areas using "contemporary" materials, ill adapted to the climatic stress, and rely on mechanical means to achieve comfort. Therefore some questions are essentials to ask: Does the concerned population perform conscious responses against any environmental characteristics to improve the climatic performance of the built form during different climatic periods? Are the vernacular architecture well suitable assets towards developing models of sustainable development? The case studies chosen to test these questions are the vernacular palm trees settlements located in the arid zones of the Touat Gourara and the M'Zab Valley, in the Algerian Sahara. The work is based on in situ investigations which combine climatic parameters and sociological and behavioral surveys to evaluate the cultural uses and adaptive capacities to extreme climatic situations.
