The current paper describes the algorithms and implementation of wireless localization using radio signal strength in a wireless sensor network. The sensor network is implemented using Texas Instruments' MSP430 microcontrollers and ChipCon 2500 RF transceivers in the 2.4 GHz range. The system attempts to localize a “blind” transmitter using a number of reference sensor nodes whose locations are known. The distance between the ‘blind’ sensor and the reference sensors is estimated based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). This measure is the basis of the localization algorithm.
