This paper introduces two ultrawideband (UWB) antennas that use a printed array of 16 antipodal elements which are defined by full- and partial-ellipses. Measured gain values are greater than 10 dB from 3.1 to 11 GHz for both designs. The proposed UWB arrays use balanced, double-sided stripline corporate feed networks with the antipodal elements mounted above a reflecting ground plane to increase gain in the forward direction. The antennas are compact (140 mm × 133 mm × 16.6 mm) with a 50-Ω feed line and offer a very simple geometry suitable for low cost fabrication and straightforward printed circuit board integration. Measured and simulated return loss values are in agreement along with the beam patterns and antenna gain as a function of frequency. The time domain behavior of the studied antennas is also examined.
