From 1894-1897 and 1907-1916 Henry Hamilton and Cecil Raleigh collaborated first with Augustus Harris and later Arthur Collins on eleven autumn dramas for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. During these periods the triumvirate of collaborators took the level of stage illusion to ever greater heights, creating stage pictures with photographic realism and using modern stage machinery to realise breathtaking scenic effects and astonishing visual sensations. A social and theatrical event, the autumn dramas were a subject of curiosity and excitement but they also lay at the heart of the theatre as entertainment versus art debate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
