Abstrakt:	The article presents a study which explores the role of groundwater scientists in improving national and local groundwater-governance provisions. The mission of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) to ensure sustainable utilisation and effective protection of groundwater resources is outlined. The criteria for evaluating groundwater-governance provisions are highlighted which include aquifer delineation, groundwater-pollution hazard assessment and the existence of basic hydrogeological maps. The economic value of groundwater resources is also discussed.
