In eighteenth-century Vienna, "Turkish" stylizations moved from the operatic stage into instrumental music. Well-known examples, identified by composers as alla turca (or its equivalent), include the third movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata, K. 331. Evidence of "Turkish" elements can be found throughout this sonata, providing an exotic linkage as a way of unifying the three movements of the piece. This argument can be extended to Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata, op. 53, where musical and historical links not only to the "Turkish" style in general but to specific ideas in Mozart's opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail can be identified. Beethoven may have used exotic elements in the "Waldstein" Sonata as a solution to the problem of finding his way to a new style of composing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
