Migration is a key mechanism for effective functioning of the common market and simultaneously a tool that has capacity to smooth out effects of geographic and structural economic imbalances. The aim of this contribution is to document the role of workers migration in the economy, and to pinpoint the factors both economic and non-economic that affect workers decision-making. The research in the essay has been performed based on several research projects: VEGA project 1/0053/12. This contribution is the result for the project implementation creating excellence in economic research department for addressing the challenges of civilization in the 21st century (ITMS 26240120032) supported by the Research & Development Operational Program funded by the ERDF.
