Abstrakt: |
The article presents a history of coca cultivation on the Netherlands East Indies' island of Java between 1880 and 1920. Particular focus is given to the concept of colonial agro-industrialism and the role of Javanese coca production and distribution in the technological innovations associated with botany and chemistry during this period. Other topics include the emergence of Javanese coca as a cash crop in the Dutch colonial agricultural industry, research on tropical plants and cultivation at the Botanical Garden of Buitenzorg on Java, and differences between the chemical composition of Javanese coca and Peruvian coca. Additionally, patent medicine, ethics in the pharmaceutical industry, and the Dutch cocaine industry are discussed. |
