Abstrakt: The essay discusses the significance of language in the work of the artist Marc Chagall, with particular focus given to Yiddish. Chagall's Jewish background and its significance in his work is commented on, and paintings including "Over Vitebsk" and "The Jew in Bright Red" are commented on. Visual depictions of type and language in his art are also touched on.
