Aim: We investigated the level of knowledge doctors have concerning radiation doses received by patients when they undergo commonly requested radiological investigations. Materials and Methods: We asked a sample of 112 doctors of different specialties and at all different grades to complete a questionnaire anonymously. They were asked to choose which radiological examination is most appropriate to perform at several different clinical entities. Then they were asked to correlate the radiation dose from a chest x-ray to the radiation dose from several routine radiological examinations. Results: Most of the participants gave incorrect answers. The majority of the clinicians underestimated the dose of radiation patients receive during radiological investigations. Conclusions: Doctors have poor knowledge of radiation exposure. Further awareness is required so as to reduce inappropriate examinations and minimize the dose of radiation received by patients during radiological examinations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
