Abstrakt: The article discusses the use of free open source textbooks in U.S. higher education, with particular focus given to barriers to adoption including funding challenges, concerns over quality, and lack of interest from professors. Free open source textbook projects created by universities including OpenStax College from Rice University and Open Textbook Catalog from the University of Minnesota are commented on, and an effort by the California state government to promote free textbooks is explored. The problems posed by lack of career or financial incentives for professors to write free textbooks are also touched on.
