Abstrakt: The article discusses the debt ceiling in the U.S. from 2001 to 2011. It states that debt held by the public has grown since fiscal year 2001 due to persistent and substantial budget deficits. A table shows the components of debt in dollars and as percentages of gross domestic product (GDP) from fiscal year 1996 to fiscal year 2011. According to the article, the size of the debt may be a problem in the future because of the size of federal deficits prompting further increases in the debt limit.
