Abstrakt: This paper focuses on partnerships in teacher education and acknowledges the features and conditions that support effective partnerships for each of the stakeholders. Specific attention is given to the partnerships in teacher education concerned with supporting the development of the professional skills, knowledge, attitudes and practice of pre-service teachers. The literature clearly identifies two models of partnership in teacher education. A key component of each of these two models is the pre-service teacher and the identified stakeholder's responsbiIity for supporting their professional learning. The literature reveals that the difference in the partnership lies in the quality and level of interaction between the key stakeholders. In this article we argue for a third model of partnership informed by an analysis of the literature and an analysis of data collected in an Australian education setting. This third model proposes that a three way partnership between the key stakeholders in the teaching profession - the school community, an education system and a university, need to be developed to support the development of the professional skills, knowledge, attitudes and practice of pre-service teachers in a more effective way. This third model is put forward as a helpful way of conceiving the importance of establishing tri-level partnerships to support the professional growth and identity of pre-service teachers.
