Abstrakt: Recent studies have been shown us that innovation is an ability that can be learned during the education process. Therefore it is important to measure innovative characteristics of youth to design appropriate learning pathways. The aim of this study is to measure the innovative skills and characteristics of students in the higher education. For this aim a survey is applied to measure the current situation of the innovative characteristics of first and third year Software Engineering students of Atılım University. In the survey we used the Youth Innovation Skills Measurement Tool. The tool has five indicators to measure the innovative skills of students, namely Leadership, Creativity, Energy, Self-efficacy, and Risk-propensity. The survey is applied to 102 students and response rate was %83, 33. The Youth Innovation Skills Measurement Tool has 38 questions and applied as five point Likert scaling. The results of the study provide us a self-view of the students according to the innovative indicators. According to the results of the study, it is observed that the participant students see themselves mostly creative, secondly energetic. However, they feel less confident for their self-efficacy and risk-propensity skills. Findings of the study can be utilized to improve the current curriculum according to the specialized needs of the students, and lead us to provide a more effective education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
