Abstrakt: It is a proven fact that the teaching of German, and German Studies in general, has dramatically decreased in Spanish Universities and other academic institutions over the last decades. And yet it is during this period that Germany has consolidated its position as a leader in the European economy. Furthermore, thereby sparking a substantial growth in commercial relationships between Spain and German-speaking countries, and with Germany in particular. There now exists a greater presence of German firms in Spain and, although to a lesser extent, of Spanish enterprises in Germany. But neither of these two factors nor the growing figures of German tourists visiting Spain have had a positive effect on the interest for German and German Studies. In this article, the causes for this paradox are delved into, arriving at the conclusion that more emphasis should be placed upon the concept and teaching/learning of Business German and German for Economic Purposes in general.
