The article presents information on a randomized trial to determine whether perioperative n-3-polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation reduces postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF). The method includes randomization of patients to receive fish oil or placebo with preoperative loading of 10 grams over three to five days followed by two gram until hospital discharge. According to the conclusion, perioperative supplementation with n-3-PUFAs did not reduce the risk of postoperative AF compared with placebo in the trial among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. |
