The performance of two popular methods of modeling the ambipolar diffusion of electrons and ions in a rarefied, hypersonic flow field using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method are examined. Flow field results for the 85 km trajectory point of the FIRE II flight experiment are generated using each model. The flow field predictions are carefully compared, and specific attention is paid to the ability of each model to maintain quasi-neutrality in the entire flow field. While the models yield similar results in the forebody region of the flow field, there are large differences between the flow field predictions generated by each model in the wake region.
