Abstrakt: An antagonistic relationship between H2O2-generating bacteria (Streptococcus mitis, Lactobacillus acidophilus) and viruses (poliovirus) is described. The antagonism is dependent on a peroxidase (lactoperoxidase, myeloperoxidase) and a halide (iodide, chloride) for maximal activity. This system may be operative in certain biological fluids.
