This study had three foci. With a sample of 290 African American and European American undergraduates enrolled in colleges in the South and the East Coast, we first examined the factor structure of the Home Communalism Measure (HCM: Boykin & Bailey, 2000), a previously designed scale examining communalism, a fundamental sense of interdependence between individuals discussed in Boykin's (1986) triple quandary theoretical framework. Second, we examined whether differences in home-based communalism reports emerge as a function of student demographic data such as race/ethnicity. Third, we examined relationships between home-based communal activities and correlates of student retention (academic adjustment and institutional attachment). Statistical procedures found no significant differences in communalism subscales scores as a function of race and other demographic variables. Also, some reports of home communalism significantly predicted undergraduates' academic adjustment and institutional attachment. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
