EXPROPRIATION AS A MODERNIZING TOOL IN THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY OTTOMAN EMPIRE: THE CASE OF CEMETERIES IN BEYOĞLU.

Abstrakt: The article discusses expropriations made by the government of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, highlighting the removal of cemeteries from the Beyoğlu district of İstanbul, Turkey in terms of civilian adaptation and resistance to the government's attempts to modernize urban space in Istanbul. The author draws on archival documents in order to note resistance from the Greek community in İstanbul to the Ottoman government's urban renewal plans regarding cemeteries, and special attention is paid to the state's role in ensuring public benefit. Other topics include replacing cemeteries with community gardens, attempts to mitigate a cholera epidemic by preventing burials, and financial aspects of expropriation.
